Who is at AO?

E-mail aliases

One mean of announcing things such as astronomy colloquia to the relevant people is e-mail. A number of e-mail aliases exist for this and related purposes. The most important of them are:

nbinews

Another mean of announcing things to a number of people is the nbinews system, which is a news system for NBIfAFG, developed by �ke Nordlund.

You can post to nbinews in the following two ways:

Via e-mail:

To send news to all NBIfAFG departments, and DSRI, send mail to "nbinews", with 
        Subject: nbinews: subject               (for general news)
        Subject: Referat subject                (for meeting accounts)
        Subject: Seminar subject                (for seminars)
        Subject: Referat (ps) subject           (for PostScript)
        Subject: Referat (tex) subject          (for TeX/LaTeX)
        Subject: Seminar (tex) subject          (for TeX/LaTeX)

Some systems are able to show TeX and PostScript as bitmapped graphics on
X-displays.  TeX files are also saved as ascii files (stripped of tex commands).
"nbinews" is a local mail alias name which expands to a list of addresses:

        [email protected]              Astronomy (i.e. AO)
        [email protected]                  Danish Space Research Inst
        [email protected]                Geophysics (not active)
        [email protected]                Oersted Lab
        [email protected]              Blegdamsvej, UNIX
        [email protected]                   Blegdamsvej+TAL, VAX

To limit the distribution, just send explicitly to the relevant "office"
addresses.

(Note: The above is from way back; is Geophysics stil not active, and hasn't TAC been added?)

Example: You are throwing a party next Friday, and you want to announce it to people at AO via nbinews. Send an e-mail to [email protected] with the Subject header reading "nbinews: Party next Friday!!!". Note the leading "nbinews: ". To make the same announcement to the entire NBIfAFG, send the same mail with the same Subject header to [email protected] instead.
Note, that your message is processed automatically, without any human involvement.

Via the Web:
Go to http://www.nbi.dk/NEWS/OTHER/nbinews_post.html and fill out the form. If you only want to send to AO, I guess you should chose "Astro" in the Distribution field. "Astro@bro" should be obsolete by now. If you want to send to the entire NBIfAFG, I guess you should chose "NBINews_distribution".

Reading nbinews at AO should be very simple, since it appears automatically when you login to machines like mira and vela. Otherwise nbinews can be invoked from the command line -- to get more info and to try it, type "nbinews nbinews".

There also seems to be a Web page at NBI about nbinews at http://www.nbi.dk/NEWS/, but from there you cannot read nbinews posted to AO only.
