It seemed like a good idea at the time, a naked girl walking down stairs, but then people started dropping in, the dog begged, the cat slurpped and it was difficult to maintain concentration. Lines and shapes went askew and began overlapping each other. Soon it was just one big mess. But inadvertently it got shipped to New York in 1913 and hung up on The Armory wall. And that was the birth of modern art. (Detail)
